Thursday, February 16th, 2017, ZfL, Schützenstraße 18 10117 Berlin The New Iraqi Protest Movement (2015-2016): From Identity to Issue Politics and Beyond Lecture by Dr Faleh Abdul-Jabbar (Iraq Institute for Strategic Studies Beirut)
In multi-ethnic and multi-religious Iraq, political protest used to crystallize largely around demands of different communities for their own share in political power and representation. Since the end of July 2015 a new protest movement has emerged. Diverging from earlier identity-based politics, this movement refocuses politics on corruption and poor provision of public goods. While such protests have been spreading in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and also in Sunni provinces, the movement is most strongly felt in Iraq’s Shiite or predominantly Shiite provinces, signaling a regression in the politicization of Iraqi Shiite identity; a historically old religious-cultural identity, which was gradually politicized by Islamic parties. February 16th-18th, 2017, Centre for the Study of Developing Societies, 29, Rajpur Road, Delhi, India Servants' Pasts, 16th to 20th Century Conference organized by Charu Gupta (University Delhi), Ravikant (CSDS), Nitin Varma (Re:Work, Humboldt University) and Nitin Sinha (ZMO)
The history of domestic servants and service in South Asia is an under-researched field. In spite of the ubiquity in both historical and contemporary periods, various strands of history writing - labour, family, socio-cultural - have largely kept servant an invisible subject.
This conference, which is part of the European Research Commission (ERC) funded project on "Domestic Servants in colonial South Asia" brings researchers together, who try to fill in this historio-graphical gap.

Till March 19th, 2017, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, Atrium Georgenstr. 47, 10117 Berlin Lives from a Global Conflict: Cultural Entanglements during the First World War Exhibition of the collaborative research project Cultural Exchange in a Time of Global Conflict
Widely and generally known as a phase of cruel battles, destruction and enormous suffering, the exhibition sheds fresh light on the First World War as a generator of imposed and voluntary encounters. Not only for Europeans but also for more than one million Asians and Africans, who fought on the side of the Entente in the battles of the Western front. The exhibition showcases the life trajectories of 16 individuals–some famous, some not–who lived through these extraordinary times, and whose experiences illustrate the global and varied nature of the Great War.
The exhibition is one outcome of a three-year collaborative research project entitled "Cultural Exchange in a Time of Global Conflict: Colonials, Neutrals, and Belligerents during the First World War”, partly hosted at ZMO.
